It was 4th October 20XX. I received an SMS…”Rs XXXXX has been debited from your account. Your remaining balance is Rs 29.”
It was not a shock to me. I had somehow managed to pay the full amount for a small plot of land I had purchased recently. I had gotten sick of changing multiple homes living on rent. Also, I never liked flats. I felt more comfortable with the idea of building my home my way on my own piece of land.
My problem had begun the day I took my father to see the plot of land I had paid an advance for. When my father looked at the plot dimensions, he asked, ‘What is your plan? Are you planning to build a shop or a home?’
The problem was with the breadth of the plot. It was very small as compared to the length. I could afford it only because it was in suburbs. My hands were already tight with the amount of personal savings I had and the maximum amount of personal loan I was eligible for.
Finally, I took two personal loans in parallel from two different banks to buy double the size of the plot as my maximum eligibility for one bank was not sufficient enough to cover the total cost.
And now it was just the beginning of the month and I was left with Rs 29 only in my bank account to pay for my food, clothes, commute to the office and even pay rent. I had to do something urgently.
I felt like a complete loser as I was left with no money. I started thinking that even after being a topper and a gold medalist, I couldn’t even afford a plot of land for myself. What about others who are not blessed like me and earn lesser?
Soon I started looking for other high-paying jobs. During the course, I had a chance encounter with one of my college buddies who was now working with a Big 4. I narrated the entire story.
He advised me against job change and told me, ‘Even though you earn less here, you at least have some work-life balance and job security. If you switch to a bigger company, they will make you a dog for your entire life for a few extra bucks. Also, you will have no work-life balance or job security.’
‘Why don’t you explore other options while still continuing to work with the same company?’ he suggested.
And my part-time income journey started back then.
Another major breakthrough incident happened almost 3 years later when I heard cries of a few people coming from the office balcony. These associates were forcibly terminated from the organization without any prior notice. I could clearly see sorrow, despair, and helplessness on their faces, especially the ones who had dependent old parents, spouses, and innocent children to take care of.
Even in my wildest dreams, I had never thought of people being fired from my so-called safe company. I realized you could never depend on your employer. They will throw you out for their own personal benefits, profitability, and survival.
Even when they don’t throw you out, there will come a time when you are no longer able to work actively. Also, you no longer have the cushion of a fixed monthly pension when you retire. Who will take care of you?
I realized every one of us must take control of our own financial destinies. One must create passive income streams while still continuing to work with their full-time job or business. One must try to become financially free as soon as possible so that they are no longer dependent on someone else.
COVID was the last straw to break the camel’s back when I saw many people who were dependent on their active sources of income either lost their jobs or had to take huge pay cuts.
Even businesses had to suffer as they were forced to shut down operations leading to major financial losses.
Even though I went through multiple ups and downs in my own financial freedom journey along with my full-time job, I decided to stay consistent. I continued working 2 extra hours a day on things that took me closer to my goal. And thankfully I am financially free today.
